Cardinal Müller Confronts Papal Authority & Critiques Church's Direction

Image
Cardinal Gerhard Müller has given an  interview with Infovaticana in which the former Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith reiterated once again that Pope Francis has no authority to change the teaching of the Church.  Müller has taken a stand against Pope Francis a number of times before, most recently having expressed dismay at the Vatican’s silence on China’s abuses and Cardinal Zen’s “unfair” trial in Hong Kong . “There will be an unfair trial next month. Nobody has raised the grave question of our brother Zen. Neither Dean [of the College of Cardinals] Cardinal Re [Giovanni Batista Re] nor Secretary of State Cardinal Parolin, even the pope. There was no solidarity document, no prayer initiative for him,” the German cardinal lamented. Cardinal Müller believes the Vatican’s deal with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has undermined the possibility of support for Zen, and has warned that the deal “does not serve the interests of the Holy See and the Vatican Sta

Damian Thompson: The Catholic Church is falling apart at the seams

Image
In the Spectator, the seasoned Catholic journalist writes the following: "This headline may seem sensational, but the evidence is overwhelming. The Catholic Church is experiencing a bewildering range of crises, some of them long-term and familiar, such as demographic collapse and the continuing scandal of sex abuse. Others are being manufactured by a Pope who is allowing a faction of Catholic boomers to push an incoherent 'New Age' agenda. Whether Francis truly supports their ideas is anyone's guess – but he's increasingly willing to spout their inanities. On Saturday the Pope's official Twitter account  told the faithful : ' The plant paradigm takes a different approach to earth and environment. Plants cooperate with all the surroundings [sic] environment; even when they compete, they cooperate for the good of the ecosystem. Let’s learn from the meekness of plants!' This was tagged #TimeofCreation. But creation of what? Yesterday, Luke Coppen of  The P

Producer of new St. Michael film: Weakening devotion to holy angels a ‘demonic strategy’

Image
A new film  Saint Michael: Meet the Angel , comes out in UK theatres on September 29th. The producer has told Lifesite that weakening devotion to holy angels a ‘demonic strategy’ "I believe the Faith is being lost because we have lost our devotions. For example, the belief in Purgatory. People actually believe these days that when you die you go to heaven and play with your dogs. That’s why I did the film Love and Mercy: Purgatory to teach people the truth. Meanwhile, people see so much evil. There’s a growing awareness that what we are seeing is a reflection of the spiritual warfare going on. And that’s what caused me to remember the angels. I worked with the Rector of the Shrine of St. Michael in Gargano, Italy, to produce this film. The goal is to inspire Catholics to return to the devotion that we had, previously, to the holy angels." THE NUB - Standing With The Word of God

This really follows on beautifully from yesterday's post  which attempts to consider the way in which certain high profile figures in the contemporary Christian milieu, and especially, presently, within the Catholic Church (I mean cardinals, the pope, not just rebel voices), are trying to break away from what we have always understood Sacred Scripture to teach. In an attempt to engage with the argument, I shared Dr Ian Paul's filleting of Brueggemann's thesis. As an evangelical Christian, I thought Ian Paul's exegesis would be an interesting foil for Fr James Martin's use of Brueggemann. Of course the whole point of being a Catholic and not a Protestant is that we have the Pope as the centre of authority . Except we don't right now. Pope Francis is a vacuum who fails to speak clearly on any number of settled issues. And then he positively promotes dissenters like Hollerich and Martin . We have seen in the Anglican communion that any attempt to maintain two int

Brueggemann, Martin & Christian Doctrine

In 1986, aware that some within the Church were presenting an overly positive view of homosexuality, the CDF issued a letter to bishops on the pastoral care of homosexual persons. It made extremely clear what the Church has consistently taught on this issue and why: "The issue of homosexuality and the moral evaluation of homosexual acts have increasingly become a matter of public debate, even in Catholic circles. Since this debate often advances arguments and makes assertions inconsistent with the teaching of the Catholic Church, it is quite rightly a cause for concern to all engaged in the pastoral ministry, and this Congregation has judged it to be of sufficiently grave and widespread importance to address to the Bishops of the Catholic Church this Letter on the Pastoral Care of Homosexual Persons. 2. Naturally, an exhaustive treatment of this complex issue cannot be attempted here, but we will focus our reflection within the distinctive context of the Catholic moral perspectiv

Joe Rogan owned by a pro-life guest...

Babylon bee Founder Seth Dillon defending the pro-life position on Joe Rogan's Show. Its good to see coherent a pro-life defence represented in popular media; so often we get politicians offering incoherent policies. I honestly think that this is how we win the argument. The pro-abortion position is totally incoherent. On the March 4 Life I have found that the Pro-abortion activists screaming abuse at us never want to engage in discussion; they know their position makes no sense.  Ultimately, to advocate for abortion is to advocate for killing people. You have to say that killing some people is OK if they are weak/helpless/dependent/unplanned/unable to defend themselves/ <----One of these reasons....But ultimately you have to accept it is OK to kill people in some circumstances. We need to expose the logical fallacy of abortion. Yes it is a difficult thing if you get pregnant but choices have life long consequences and abortion does not change that you did get pregnant and that
