Following this recent story about Jason Evert having a number of talks cancelled in Ireland due to the counter-cultural nature of his message, and Ireland's head-long descent into hellish darkness, Jason himself has appeared on the Patrick Coffin show and spoken about the events. Initially I was quite critical of the fact that Bishop Alphonsus Cullinan had refused to speak to Irish media about the situation. It seemed to me that this was missing an opportunity to speak up for Catholic teaching in an area which is all too often ignored and where young people especially, desperately need information and guidance: a counter narrative to help them form a balanced perspective given all the brain washing that goes on about sexuality and the Church from the secular media. Jason and Crystalina Evert, picture: Facebook Ireland, my ancestral homeland, has turned away from the light over the last decade or so and there's virtually no one to stand against the flow of darkness. As I have opined over a number of years now , the faith of the once proud land of saints and scholars, the tiny island that evangelised half the world, has been eroded until it is little more than superstition. This epidemic of agnosticism and apathy has been brought about by a lack of teaching, episcopal hypocrisy and an appalling record of abuse. The bishops in Ireland continue to be utterly useless, lording it up in massive domiciles surrounded by luxury and privilege while doing absolutely nothing to combat the tide of secularism drowning the country. The profile pic is the Bishop of Limerick Brendan Leahy who also features on the FB page, which is very Pope Francis (which make sense). Not surprising Ireland is in so much trouble! One thing's for sure, if the Bishop was condemning homosexual acts or advocating the old Mass, you can bet Archbishop Martin would be down on him like a ton of bricks. A huge part of the problem across the world is that the sort of propagation of misinformation, supplanting the Catholic faith with some kind of superstitious mysticism, pantheism or world-religion, is completely acceptable, even here ...

As a person of Irish heritage, I feel drawn to comment on this, or at least to point my readers to some useful facts about this horrible story. It first broke in 2014 and I posted about it here , giving an eye witness account of the experience in the Bon Secours home.  Now with the release of the results of the investigation into the contents of the grave, the media storm has been re-ignited in full force ! What a great opportunity to beat the Church up! Caroline Farrow has done a great deal of work looking to forensically discover the truth behind the stories, see here . There is a lot of vicious hatred being poured out in the direction of the Catholic Church in Ireland at the moment as a result of this. No one seems particularly interested in the truth. So the inevitable capitulation to secular nicety in the face of reality has taken place in Ireland, the land of my Mother. I feel very sad about this I have to say, especially as I have Irish roots. I'm watching posts from family there and relations here, on Facebook, supporting the yes vote and saying things like "hopefully people will see sense". People see this as a simple issue, they seem to think this is about equality, about discrimination, about whether we like gay people or not. Even if those voting do not see it in these terms, this is how the "Yes" campaigners have sought to portray the debate. The very fact that this is true is demonstrative of just how huge the failure of the Church in Ireland has been. RTE News  reports that hundreds of people queued in the rain outside Holy Trinity Church in Cork on Sunday, to venerate the relics of St Anthony of Padua. Just one more example of the extraordinary strength of the faith and Catholicity of Irish Catholics--very powerful witness! I think this demonstrates, as I have stated previously , the deep rooted faith of the Irish people, which desperately needs nourishing, after the scandals of recent years. I often find myself discussing (as indeed I did earlier today) how and why so many Catholic devotions seem to have declined over recent years. Many of the practices I remember from my own childhood are alien to youngsters today. You rarely see a holy picture, or hear of a family praying the Rosary together. Even grace before and after meals is infrequently observed. I've been in the beautiful, wild, West of Ireland for ten days with my family. I love it here, it is home to me, a place that has constantly been a part of my life no matter where I have been or lived in England. Mayo has always been home, where the family are, where the familiar places are. I often wonder, and am often asked if I could live here. I dream about it all the time, but one of the real problems I would have would be the Church here. The liturgy is poor, the people seem spiritually starved. The Mass is often dreadful, occasionally bearable. There is no sense of reverence or sacredness, the best you can hope for is an enthusiastic or genial delivery of the canon of the Mass; the responses are rushed and formulaic.
