On this recent episode of EWTN's The World Over , we find some typical responses to the latest Papal confusion.  As Raymond Arroyo points out, the function & purpose of the meeting with the Pope was for Biden to demonstrate clearly that you can be a good Catholic receiving communion and yet openly promote and support abortion. It is hard to understand why there is such confusion about this consistent teaching of the Church, but there is, and, for those of us who have studied the faith, it is a huge cause of pain to go to Mass on Sunday knowing that the queue for Holy Communion will far, far outnumber that for the Sacrament of Confession, and that all those who are receiving the blessed Sacrament unworthily will not benefit from the grace conferred by the Sacrament: it is not enough to perform an action, especially if there is no change of heart behind that action. What God wants is for us to change our hearts, our very way of being. In the Holy Smoke podcast last week, seasoned UK journalist Damian Thompson analysed the Vatican's attempt to silence the USCCB criticism of newly elected President Joe Biden, which I first wrote about here . This is well worth a listen: I think the first thing to say is that it is obvious that this situation has only arisen because the USCCB did not point out these problems with Biden prior to the election. To me this lack of action sums up the lack of potency in the Church at the moment which means we are paying lip service only to the Gospel: it says to Catholics all over the world that doctrine doesn't matter - that you don't need to follow Catholic teaching - that no rules apply - that the Church could be "wrong" on these fundamental issues of life - that secular society has a point about killing unborn children being a good thing. Extraordinary events last Wednesday when USCCB conference president Archbishop Jose Gomez, issued a statement which took uncompromising positions on abortion, gender, and religious liberty, warning that the Biden administration’s policy agenda would advance “moral evils” on several fronts, which was then spiked. The statement was expected to be released at 9:00 am Jan. 20. The Pillar (a new Catholic news source founded by Canon Laywer Ed Condon and former editor of CNA J.D.   On Tuesday 24th November, a few days before the consistory in which  Wilton Gregory was made a cardinal of the Catholic Church, JD Flynn posted an analysis of recent comments by the Archbishop of  Washington that he is happy to give Holy Communion to Joe Biden. Gregory, who was then made a cardinal at the weekend, told a journalist on Tuesday that in his diocese, he will not deny Holy Communion to a politician who has pledged to enshrine access to abortion in federal law and permit federal funding of abortions. This seems to be in defiance of the recent US Conference of Catholic Bishops statement which, though massively hypocritical in itself , did point out that there were serious problems with some of Biden's policies.   This is a great Vortex. Last week I felt really disgusted to see the US Conference of Catholic Bishops come out and say that there were some problems with Joe Biden's policies. This follows close on the heals of their congratulating him for being a practising Catholic and their constant attacking of Trump and at least tacit support for Biden during the campaigning. This really is laughable - the bishops remain silent leading up to the election, rush to congratulate Biden before the results are finalised, and now express concern about his agenda?
