The Tablet reports that a French court has ordered Cardinal Philippe Barbarin, the Archbishop of Lyon, to be tried early next year for “failing to denounce a sexually abusive priest”. The report states that the trial, already delayed twice, will now move forward on 7-9th of January despite the Vatican’s “failure to respond to a summons issued to Cardinal Ladaria" .  Cardinal Luis Ladaria Ferrer was appointed prefect for the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith by Pope Francis after the abrupt dismissal of its previous prefect, Gerhard Ludwig Müller, in 2017. Some commented that this was because Ladaria was "more malleable". Lawyers for the victims say Ladaria had advised Barbarin by letter in 2015 to discipline Preynat but avoid public scandal. At the time, he was secretary of the CDF, the Vatican department that handles clerical sexual abuse cases. I thought this was quite cheery positive and accurate from Michael Matt: The case is that this is bad, and now it is on full display for everyone to see. Much of the talk among friends is of why God is allowing such a withering time for faithful Catholics. Despite the fact that this is incredibly difficult for all of us, that the faith seems to be daily mocked by those who are supposed to guard, teach and defend the faith, many of us seem to have rather a clear sense that, on some level, this has to happen. The wound needs to be cleansed before it can heal. What is clear is that the scum is really floating to the top. Cardinal Gerhard Müller former prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) at the Vatican speaks at length about the cover up of sex abuse by clergy, the Youth Synod getting underway in Rome this week and much more in this interview. Asked about the scandal surrounding abuse in the Church the Cardinal explains how this abuse comes from a breakdown of morality in society, a rejection of the sixth commandment. This breakdown has also entered the Church as well. Cardinal Müller clearly states that the abuse crisis is a homosexual crisis, he is clear about the statistics involved. Müller also says the Pope's suggestions that abuse is down to "clericalism" is nonsense. It is a violation of the Sixth Commandment.
