Shock Resignation Bishop of Hexham & Newcastle

Some shocking news today that Robert Byrne, the Oratorian appointed to the See of Hexham & Newcastle in 2019 has resigned.

In his letter of resignation to the diocese he states that he has discerned that he is no longer able to serve the people of the diocese in the way that he would wish.

Bishop Byrne is someone I have met:

He was appointed auxiliary of Birmingham in 2014, the first Oratorian bishop appointed in England since 1874, when Fr Edward Bagshawe of the London Oratory became Bishop of Nottingham.

He is a good man and this is a real shame for the Church in England and Wales. I have no doubt this was an extremely difficult decision for Bishop Byrne, please keep him in your prayers as he discerns his next move.

  1. Very sad indeed. As an aside, you may wish to read the numerous articles on Bishop Pat Buckley’s blog which cites various muck-rankings and even confirmation the the UK’s outgoing Papal Nuncio and the Archbishop of Liverpool have instigated an investigation into Bishop Berne’s conduct, which might involve the Police.

  2. Read the CSSA report on him and how he housed a paedophile. Please get your facts right before you call him a good man. He has, as many others in clergy have, brought the church into disrepute. Blind faith and loyalty allows such men to destroy the church’s ability to function and will lead to its eventual demise.
