Sandro Magister has some very interesting news from Rome . On the morning of Friday December 13, the fiftieth anniversary of the first Mass of Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the Pope said Mass in the Vatican chapel of Santa Marta with all the cardinals currently residing in Rome. Magister explains that this was the idea of Cardinal Angelo Sodano, in his capacity as dean of the college of cardinals. Apparently Francis had initially rejected the idea but Sodano had not given up, and thanks to a second effort by college sub-dean Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, he was finally able to convince the Pope to hold the Mass. Apparently Sodano mentioned the Pope's resistance in his letter of invitation to the cardinals. Sodano was widely considered to be one of the most corrupt elements in the Roman curia. Further to the recent comments of Cardinal Christoph Schönborn of Vienna in Ireland, certain commentators have been spinning like crazy to make him look like some sort of orthodox heavyweight. Notably, old Catholic Voices collaborators Austen Ivereigh and Greg Daly are slagging off everyone from EWTN to The Spectator and The Catholic Herald and insisting "there's nothing to see here", utterly blind to their own hubris. They both seem to spend quite a lot of time these days attacking old friends and opposing anyone who has any questions about Pope Francis & his direction, even though Austen has been directly wrong footed by the Pope recently himself! It is certainly the case, like numerous other modern churchmen, Schönborn has written some good stuff and his intellect is not in question. This weekend I have been praying for unity in the Church. The Catholic Church bears unique charisms which protect it from error. over the centuries this has been demonstrated sometimes in quite dramatic form. Infallibility is the protection given by the Holy Spirit to the pope so that he will never teach error in matters of faith and morals.  But the open divisions I have witnessed since the Synod on the family have scared me and scandalised me terribly. To be honest, having studied Catholic theology, most of what has been said by the likes of Cardinal Kasper and Cardinal Marx should never have been said. I have personally wrestled with the dialogue and the prospect of a change in stance which would amount to nothing less than an acceptance of relativism and a turning away from the deposit of faith--in contradiction with the very raison d'être of the Papacy, which is to hold fast to the fides quae , the faith which was deposited by Christ. Cardinal Carlo Caffarra Sandro Magister reports today what could well be the turning of the tide with regard to the controversial Synod on Marriage and the Family. “This does not resolve anything,” Pope Francis has said with regard to the idea of giving communion to the divorced and remarried.
