Bishop Strickland gives extensive interview

Image
On Friday, Bishop Joseph Strickland of Tyler, Texas, the brave defender of the faith who has been targeted by Pope Francis for teaching what the Church has always held to be true, had an extensive conversation with Dr. Robert Moynihan and Fr. Charles Murr. If you don't know Dr. Robert Moynihan is founder and editor-in-chief of Inside the Vatican magazine. He is an American journalist who speaks five languages, and a seasoned Vatican analyst. He earned his B.A. in English, magna cum laude, from Harvard, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Medieval Studies from Yale. His thesis title was The Influence of Joachim of Fiore on the Early Franciscans: A Study of the Commentary Super Hieremiam. Other research fields included: History of Christianity, Later Roman Empire and The Age of Chaucer. Moynihan also received a Diploma in Latin Letters from the Gregorian University in Rome, Italy. Dr. Moynihan is a world-renowned commentator on Catholic issues who has appeared on Fox News, CNN, ABC, EWTN and o...

Bishop Schneider to Bishop Strickland: "Future Popes will thank you!"

Image
From The Remnant : The following letter in support of Bishop Strickland was sent to  The Remnant  by Bishop Athanasius Schneider. In it he stands in solidarity with his brother bishop and offers encouragement as Strickland faces the judgement of the Vatican  (more specifically from “Heal Me with Your Mouth” Cardinal-designate and new head of the Vatican’s Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, Víctor Manuel "Tucho" Fernández) , for "keeping the traditions of the Fathers" and "not silencing Truth" in the runup to the Synod on Synodality.   Praised be Jesus Christ! Your Excellency, Bishop Strickland, dear and esteemed brother in the episcopate! It is for me a privilege and a joy to express to you all my gratitude and appreciation for your intrepid dedication to uncompromisingly keep, transmit, and defend the Catholic faith, which the apostles handed over to the Church and with which all the generations of Catholics, especially our ancestors, our fathers a...

A Question of Authority: Catholic Unscripted Episode 30

Image
I have been looking forward to getting together with Gavin and Katherine to discuss some of the extraordinary developments in the Catholic world over the last couple of weeks and we managed to find some time on Saturday. We talked about Fr. Altman's claims that Pope Francis is not the Pope , the Vatican launching a very public attack on Bishop Joseph Strickland  and Cardinal Müller, Prefect for the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith under Pope Benedict XVI, who gave an interview to Spanish news website InfoVaticana last week - I posted an English translation here - in which he states (among other things): Q-What would happen if, for example, the Synod Assembly approved the blessing of homosexual couples, the change in sexual morality, the elimination of the obligation of priestly celibacy or allowing the female diaconate? Would you accept it? A-Priestly celibacy must be eliminated from this list, since the connection of the sacrament of Holy Orders with the charisma of vol...

The Catholic Tribalism of Pope Francis

Image
It has been an extraordinary week or so in the Catholic World where we have seen some truly revealing reactions from the main social media voices who support Pope Francis no matter what. This firestorm was prompted, in the first instance, by Bishop Joseph Strickland's Pastoral Letter  issued on 23 August, the full text of which is available to read here . The next day, Dr. Scott Hahn innocuously thanks Bishop Strickland for his faithfulness. Mike Lewis, the editor of Where Peter Is , took this as a sign of schism and immediately started attacking Hahn in the most vociferous way. This went on and on and on - as it invariably does with Mike: It seemed he got considerable push back from the public. Little wonder really, Scott Hahn is a lovely guy, he is a genius and he is the author of many, many books and interviews all of which do nothing other than lead people to fullness of truth found in the Catholic Church. The tribalism between Catholics on social media continues apace, this is...

The Good Shepherd - Strickland's Latest Letter

Image
Bishop Strickland is a true shepherd after the Heart of Jesus Christ. He is definitely under attack so please pray for him! He has issued a new pastoral letter -- one of the best I've ever seen! It is full of zeal for the Catholic Faith and genuine charity for his flock. Here's a particularly important passage: In the weeks and months ahead, many of these truths will be examined as part of the Synod on Synodality. We must hold fast to these truths and be wary of any attempts to present an alternative to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, or to push for a faith that speaks of dialogue and brotherhood, while attempting to remove the fatherhood of God. When we seek to innovate upon what God in His great mercy has given us, we find ourselves upon treacherous ground. The surest footing we can find is to remain firmly upon the perennial teachings of the faith. Regrettably, it may be that some will label as schismatics those who disagree with the changes being proposed. Be assured, however...

Bishop Strickland - Apostolic Visitation

Image
If you have read my recent Catholic Herald article , you will probably be aware of the bishop of Tyler Texas, Bishop Joseph Strickland. As I mentioned, on a recent trip to the USA two things became increasingly obvious. Regular Americans of all stamps are frustrated that bishops seem to be endorsing error and failing to stand up for the faith. Bishop Strickland is considered the most vocal episcopal voice for the faith in the USA. This has led to him being dubbed "America's Bishop", a title last applied to the Venerable Fulton J. Sheen. Bishop Strickland recognises the consternation American Catholics feel when their bishops endorse Father James Martin SJ, whose voice grows louder and louder, especially on social media, where he is regularly attacking the deposit of faith, calling Scripture into question , this from just a couple of days ago: ...And this is not a one off, he does it all the time, here is one from last year: I wrote a blog about that incident here , asking...

Faithful Catholics follow bishops who offer true and courageous leadership

Image
From my latest article in the Catholic Herald : Bishop Strickland was reported to be supportive of a lay initiative to protest the The LA Dodgers Baseball Team's invitation of a group of anti-Catholic drag queens called the “Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence” to their June 16th Pride Night to present them with the Community Hero Award.  The group have staged events mocking Catholic symbols and rituals. They call themselves an “Order” and takes considerable delight in mocking Catholic customs and traditions by dressing up as nuns, calling themselves “sisters”, their leader “abbess” and mis-quoting the Bible verse, “go and sin no more”, changing it to “go and sin some more.” This has caused considerable backlash from lay people and the US bishops appeared not to know which way to turn, the LA Diocese distanced itself from the rally urging prayer, not a rally while both Bishop Robert Baron and Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone urged public witness against the Dodgers. The rally was a h...

Bishop Strickland: Fr James Martin's Blasphemy Must Stop!

Image
Bishop Joseph Strickland of Tyler, Texas, is a clear voice for the Catholic faith. Perhaps one might say the clearest voice , at least currently. His outspokenness and clarity has not, as one might hope, brought him universal acclaim. Mike Lewis at the popesplaining site  Where Peter Is , for example, has called for him to be removed after the brave bishop called out Pope Francis' constant undermining of the deposit of faith and suggested that we should follow Jesus - an idea which should not really be that radical, but under this papacy, sadly, is. Of course, this tact from Mr. Lewis just serves to show how poor his understanding of the episcopacy actually is. When I visited Chicago in April , Bishop Strickland's name was heard often and loudly. It was at the top of the list of "good bishops" from clergy and laity alike. I found this very heartening: "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they sha...
