Mennon's article commenting on the present dire situation in the Church, he suggests that there are two reasons that no one, or very few people, anyway, are prepared to accuse the pope and his entourage of formal heresy. Firstly because the heresy being peddled is indirect, obscure. Secondly because the one who appears to be pushing it is the Pope, and it is unheard of that anyone should have need to correct the pope on faith or morals. He also noted that for bishops to start openly calling on the Pope to repent of his heresy would mean existential and open schism, which would cause great pain to the Church. These reasons all make a lot of sense to me. They almost seem like good reasons for the clamour against Amoris Laetitia and the subsequent episcopal statements of Malta , Germany , Portugal ...
