Sr Miriam Duggan FMSA, FRCOG (82) is a native of Limerick, Ireland. In 1969 she was one of the first qualified obstetricians in Uganda. She headed the maternity unit of Nsambia Hospital, Kampala for 30 years. In this 30 minute interview Sr Miriam discusses her experiences, including :  Addressing the Ugandan parliament on abortion.  The abstinence programme for HIV which reduced the incidence from 25% to 6%  The role of Mother Kevina (Kearney) in the development of health care in Uganda.  Conscientious Objection for pro life medical students and health care personnel.  UK abortion experiences.  She also mentions her early medical training and specialisation in obstetrics. Life was founded in 1970 Professor Jack Scarisbrick and his wife Nuala in response to the Abortion Act 1967 on the principle that it is not enough simply to oppose abortion but that the positive alternatives should also be provided. Life is a UK-based pro-life educational and caring charity which has in the region of 12,000 members in the UK. Its patrons include well-known pro-life parliamentarians, such as David Alton, Baron Alton of Liverpool.  Life was the first pro-life organisation in the UK to pioneer this two-pronged approach of opposing abortion yet also providing viable long-term alternatives. The people I know who dedicate their lives to the pro-life cause are some of the most inspirational Catholics I know. Their faith is truly a source of light and hope for many. They believe and they put that belief into radical action fighting the culture of death which surrounds us today. It was great, therefore, to hear the Holy Father, during the papal General Audience on April 12, Pope Francis met with members of Croatia’s 40 Days for Life campaign. Pope Francis told the group. “You are doing the best possible work! Save as many lives as possible! I encourage you and bless you with every blessing. There is no more important work from this one, be persistent and pray, pray, pray!” The Pope assured them of his support and asked for their prayers according to the account posted on Lifesite News here . This takes on greater importance in the context of Ireland's moving closer to legalising abortion .
