Archbishop Cordileone is that extraordinary thing today: a faithful, believing bishop and one with brains a plenty. He is not afraid to go into bat for Christ's Church, and when he does, he writes with real flair and aplomb.  The faithful, erudite, Fr Perricone comments in Crisis : Pentecostal fire still burns   brightly in San Francisco.   It blazes from the episcopal throne of Archbishop Cordileone, most recently in his  exceptional editorial  in the  Wall Street Journal . He trumpets a sanguine defense of the Church, so unusual for his kind.   The Pillar has an interview with Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone in which he gives a beautiful exposition of Church teaching regarding many of the difficult issues we face in society today.  Would that we had such clarity from the Vatican!! Bishop Robert Barron has only been a diocesan bishop for a month, but, on August 5th, he used his Word on Fire media platform to wade in to perhaps the most controversial ecclesial argument in the US Church; that of Eucharistic coherence . I say controversial, but of course, it really shouldn't be. It is blindingly obvious where the Church stands on the issue and what she teaches. This argument is also obvious in natural law and reason. But Pope Francis himself has made the issue controversial by very personal interventions against US bishops who are standing up for the integrity of Church teaching by upholding it. LifeNews reports that rabidly pro-abort Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, was seen at Holy Trinity in Georgetown, Washington D.C. and received Holy Communion. I would expect nothing less from Pelosi, especially given she probably feels completely vindicated having met with Pope Francis in October last year. If she understood the seriousness of her spiritual position she would not be so vehemently supporting abortion. But she is, and this necessitates further action from those seeking to save her. This motivation was clearly articulated by Archbishop Cordileone: "After numerous attempts to speak with Speaker Pelosi to help her understand the grave evil she is perpetrating, the scandal she is causing, an the danger to her own soul she is risking, I have determined that she is not to be admitted to Holy Communion." In an interview on EWTN, Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone explains why he signed the letter to the German Church . His contacts in Germany tell him the faithful in Germany are pleading for help as too many German bishops' reject scripture and tradition on gender and sexual morality. This is another sad example of how impotent Pope Francis is in his role as the point of unity for the Church.

  I watched this cringe-filled interview of Archbishop Cordileone by EWTN's Raymond Arroyo over the weekend. Raymond does really well in asking the hard questions of Archbishop Cordileone, but I felt desperately sorry for the Archbishop. What a position to be put in! He does his absolute best to rely on the Pope's strong condemnation of abortion, but, notwithstanding those words, this act, devoid as it was of any condemnation of Pelosi's anti-Catholic actions and given the present circumstances, where the Archbishop is involved in a very public debate with Pelosi and Pelosi has advanced abortion on demand in a radical and aggressive way, can only be seen as an attempt to criticise the USCCB strategy on Eucharistic coherence. Mgr Keith Newton presides at Pontifical High Mass for the closing of the Sacra Liturgia Conference in London. It was a busy week at work last week. I was keeping up with developments at the Sacra Liturgia Conference in London, although I wasn't able to attend myself. Some friends did though, and kept me informed regarding the content of the discussions. My Course Director from Maryvale, Fr Michael Cullinan, was one of the speakers. Delivering a talk on the ethical character of the mysteries . As well as Stephen Bullivant , Cardinal Robert Sarah ,  Mgr Andrew Burnham , among others. On Friday, I had to get up at 4am and drive to Chelsea to prepare for a job we have starting at a school there. My good friend Fr Jeff Woolnough suggested we head up to Warwick Street in the evening for the closing Mass of the Conference. Despite being really tired, I jumped at the chance.
