What a "Toxic Nightmare" Looks Like

  Yesterday (30th Jan 2023) Cardinals Grech & Hollerich — Secretary General & General Relator of the Synod on Synodality — sent a letter to all bishops on the role of bishops in the synodal process. To state the blindingly obvious, this would seem to be a bit late on in the process to be explaining to bishops what exactly it is they are supposed to have been doing for the last few years, but perhaps that is because no one has much of a clue. Even their own website is baffling . The whole thing seems to be word salad. In their letter, Grech and Hollerich also say that they wish to clarify any misunderstanding over what the Synod is truly about. Sadly, if that truly was their intention, this letter fails miserably. What the letter does do is desperately try to tie synodality to Vatican II ( a reminder that synodality is a complete novelty and appears nowhere in Vatican II's documents) and also tries to use Lumen Gentium 12 to force a deeply spurious  argumentum ad populum: 

Bishop Barron Weighs In

It's great to see Bishop Robert Barron weighing in to comment on what seems to be the prevailing narrative of the synod on synodality, which Cardinal Pell, in his final interview, described as a " Toxic nightmare ". In his statement , the bishop states: increasingly uneasy with two words that feature prominently in the document and that dominated much of our discussion—namely, “inclusivity” and “welcoming.” He draws attention to the woolly language used and the imprecision of the terminology and asks would a Church exhibiting these qualities (inclusivity and welcoming) never pose a moral challenge to those who would seek entry? Would it ratify the behaviour and lifestyle choices of anyone who presented him or herself for admission? Would it effectively abandon its own identity and structuring logic so as to accommodate any and all who come forward? A Farewell to Cardinal George Pell

What a terribly sad start to 2023 it has been with the death of Pope Benedict XVI swiftly followed by the sad news last night that George Cardinal Pell had died as a result of complications after a hip replacement. He was 81. Pell is one of only two cardinals I have met so far in my life and the only one I have had the honour of sharing a pint of beer or two with. Compared with a lot of the people I have encountered in similar situations; Pell was incredibly normal and relaxed. He was every inch a priest but struck me as someone who was honest and straightforward, deeply committed to his faith and comfortable and competent defending it. He exuded confidence, the kind of quiet confidence that comes from Christ. His eyes sparkled with intelligence and interest, he was engaging and articulate and I wanted to be on his side. On the occasion of our meeting, back in 2014, Cardinal Pell provided an excellent example of the principle perhaps best embodied in the Pontificate of Benedict XVI:

This is a great discussion from Trent Horn who puts together a really good argument which could be a better explanation of Pope Francis' condemnation of "proselytising". Because the pope's explanation is virtually impossible to understand if you ask me: "These so-called “evangelicals” preach prosperity. They promise a Gospel that does not know poverty, but simply seeks to make proselytes. This is exactly what Jesus condemns in the Pharisees of his time. I’ve said it many times: proselytism is not Christian." By contrast, Trent uses the idea from CS Lewis that an Atheist will get more from a well written science book written by a Christian  than a book by the same person on Christian apologetics which they will dismiss without reading. Developing the theme further, he explains how we need to build a bridge of love in order for the truth to heard. How Pope Benedict XVI Called us to be Disciples

 As I recently stated on Catholic Unscripted , I truly believe that Pope Benedict XVI made an immeasurable contribution to the world. It is a legacy that will not end with his death but will stretch far into the future. I believe we will be studying his works in hundreds of years time, just as we study Augustine, Aquinas, Teresa of Avila and Anthony of Padua today. His contribution has formed the Church we have today and his theological reflection was equalled by his encouragement of the ways in which lay Catholics can be present in culture and politics, by prioritising Christian witness and the contribution of ideas to the secular debate without fear or compromise. Pope Benedict XVI knew how to reduce the great mysteries of life and faith to their most comprehensible form which was demonstrative of his thorough understanding of them. He proposed an intelligent, reasonable and comprehensible Christianity and avoided moralism. He understood the importance of the reality that faith takes

This is an article written by Roderick Blyth on 15 September 2010 and constitutes what he describes as a damascene moment for him. It is particularly pertinent today I think because it demonstrates where, precisely, the rot has set in and in doing so demonstrates that Pope Benedict XVI knew where it was and had a strategy to deal with it (through the catechism and his beautiful exposition of Jesus, for example).   ''On 9 September 2010 a BBC journalist called Mark Dowd presented an interesting survey of the different voices within the Catholic Church in Britain. Catholic Unscripted Episode 13: Rupnik vs Pavone, Pope's radical appointments & King's Speech

  Recorded on the 29th December before Pope Benedict XVI died. We discuss the incongruity between the laicisation of pro-life hero Frank Pavone & the cover up of abuse committed by Marko Rupnik. I wrote extensively about Pavone here . Although the problems that led to this sanction are well documented, it is extremely difficult to reconcile the removal of his vocational calling, given he has responded with humility and always sought obedience while maintaining the mission he has been a part of for numerous years, with the leniency given to disgraced Jesuit abuser Rupnik.  I was one of the first to report on the Rupnik scandal for the Catholic Herald (see my article here ). In a new interview, shared here by Corpus Christi Watershed, Archbishop Georg Gänswein, Prefect of the Papal Household, and personal secretary to Pope Benedict XVI has told how Traditiones Custodes , the poorly written and rushed reversal of his Motu Proprio Summorum Pontificum , broke the old pope's heart. The interviewer asks: "So, Pope Benedict’s lifting of restrictions on celebrating the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite according to the 1962 Missal did not last as long as he intended.
