We Interview a Radical Firebrand

In this episode of Catholic Unscripted, Katherine Bennett and Mark Lambert sit down with "radical firebrand" Fr James Altman to hear the remarkable story of his vocation, a journey that led him from a successful life as a lawyer (and MBA) to the seminary, and ultimately to the priesthood. Fr Altman shares how God’s hand was at work long before he ever imagined a collar: childhood loneliness that became spiritual strength, the quiet grace of holy religious sisters, early devotion to the martyrs, years of serving in the Church while feeling “different,” and then a single, overwhelming moment at an ordination that changed everything. This conversation is honest, intense, funny in places, and deeply encouraging for anyone who’s ever wondered: “Is God calling me… and what do I do if He is?” We live in an age that glorifies self-creation, self-expression and self-sovereignty. But Christianity is built on something utterly different: obedience, surrender, and being sent. A priest’s vocation is the ultimate contradiction of the modern world. Satan says he would rather reign in Hell than serve in Heaven. A priest says 'I would rather serve in truth than rule in lies.'

A report from Ines San Martin provides some insight into what led Cardinal Prevost to choose the name Leo XIV. Real Life Catholics on BBC TV defend Church Teaching on Contraception.

This morning on BBC TV Sunday Morning Live there was a good debate inspired by Melinda Gates (who identifies as Catholic) comments about the pope potentially changing doctrine on contraception. The Catholic contributors were Fr Paddy McCafferty, Clare Short and Obianuju Ekeocha. I think they did really well. Uju's direction is very interesting and easily wrong foots those who want to impose western ideas of morality on Africans in an imperialistic way. Interesting that the presenter agrees with her on this. Fr Paddy gave a great account of his experience as a priest. He was compassionate, realistic and honest, while upholding the value and importance of the doctrine. Clare said she had experience of both ways and the Catholic way is better by far. I thought that was awesome! I especially liked her focus on equality and bringing the responsibility of both husband & wife into the discussion.
