The passage, brimming with the mystery of the Incarnation, is wonderfully expressive of the infinite stillness that hovered over Christ's birth.   Damian Thompson has followed the career of Archbishop Arthur Roche for many years. He is not a fan. Roche had earned a reputation for incompetence when bishop in Leeds. This 2014 article, from The Tablet reports on his legacy of debt. He also controversially closed almost half the parishes in the diocese in a brutal campaign which caused a great deal of hurt and frustration. On a much more positive note: what are the intrinsic dynamics of conversion to the Catholic faith? What would make an Elder in the Jehovah Witnesses, well known for its covetousness of members, harsh treatment of apostates and fundamentalist approach to religion, leave at great personal cost and become a Catholic? In the light of yesterday's news, I have been thinking about this ancient image of the Church: The pelican symbolises Jesus our Redeemer who gave His life for our redemption and the atonement He made through His passion and death. We were dead to sin and have found new life through the Blood of Christ. Moreover, Jesus continues to feed us with His body and blood in the holy Eucharist.   Pope Francis says he wants a synodal Church that reaches out to the marginalised, where mercy is at the centre of who and what we are. Today we saw another example of just how far his words differ from his actions  as Archbishop Arthur Roche issued an application document on Traditiones custodes in the form of eleven dubia . With the Vatican "trial of the century" rapidly turning into a parody of itself , you might think the Pope and his leading men would recognise there are bigger priorities in the Church than fighting Catholics determined to keep the faith of the Saints alive. But you would be wrong. This document effectively bans Traditional Sacraments and forbids Confirmations and Ordinations without exception.
